"2020 Year of the Nurse" is a documentary that tells the story of Black nurses and practitioners in Virginia, New York, and other cities across the country. The Covid-19 Pandemic took the world by surprise and sent doctors and nurses to the frontlines of a battle that they were not prepared for. It exposed the cracks in the healthcare system and brought the nursing shortage front and center. As if things weren't hectic enough, Covid-19 disproportionately affected the Black community and collided head-on with the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor. Shot during the height of the pandemic, these brave medical professionals tell their stories in real-time as the death toll mounts.

Despite the lack of personal protective equipment, grueling hours, and civil unrest, these nurses showed up to fulfill their professional oaths. Most nurses feel like they are called to the profession, and they are willing to risk their lives and the lives of their families to fight Covid-19. Not only did they risk their lives, but they compromised their mental health and sanity. Each day, they dealt with death at a rate they had never seen before. They even had to watch their patients die alone and continue working to save the next patient. Due to visitor restrictions, nurses became everything to their patients. They are truly the backbone of our health care system, and their efforts are a testimony to their courage, resilience, and strength.
